In formation of ion from an atom, electrons may be lost or gained. However, no protons can be gained or lost by atoms in chemical changes.

Each proton carries +1 charge, while each electron carries -1 charge. When a sulfur atom becomes an S²⁻, the ion formed has 2 more electrons than the S atom. Therefore, the atom should gains 2 electrons in order to increase the negative charge of the species.

The answer: The atom gains 2 electrons to have a total of 18.
