Erasing and putting songs onto an iPod shuffle for free?

I have an old iPod shuffle with songs already on there from when I used to use it. I want to erase those songs and add other songs to it. How do I erase the songs and add new songs for free without iTunes?

I would use Media Monkey....but if you still have a copy of i tunes on the computer it may interfere, so you may have to delete i tunes before media monkey will work properly...
