A certain organism begins as three cells. Each cell splits and becomes two cells at the end of two days. At the end of another two days, every cell of the organism splits and becomes two cells. This process lasts for a total of 8 days, and no cells die during this time. How many cells are there at the end of the 8th day?

No. of cells at the end of the 8th day
= 3 × 2^(8/2)
= 3 × 2^4
= 3 × 16
= 48

You can use the identical method to find the no. of cells at the end of the nth day (n is an even number).
It is 3 × 2^(n/2).

For example, no. of cells at the end of the 30th day
= 3 × 2^(30/2)
= 3 × 2^15
= 3 × 32768
= 98304

Glad they only made it for 8 days , not 800.
As they split every 2 days, 8 days would be 4 splits
so at the start you have 3 cells, after the first split you have 6
After the 2nd split you will have 12
After the 3rd split you will have 24
And finally, after the 4th split you have 48 cells

3 x2 x2 x2 x2

end of 1st day = 3*2 = 3*2^1
end of 2st day = 3*2*2 = 3*2^2
end of 3st day = 3*2*2*2 = 3*2^3
end of 8th day = 3*2^8

3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 192, 384
3 + 6 + 12 + 24 + 48 + 96 + 192 + 384
= 765
