The decomposition of baking soda produces carbon dioxide gas. If 42.6 mL of wet gas is collected over water at 22 C and 764 mm Hg, what is the volume of dry gas at STP conditions? Vapor pressure of H2O at 22C is 19.8 mm Hg.

CO₂ gas collected: P₁ = (764 - 19.8) mmHg, V₁ = 42.6 mL , T₁ = (273 + 22) K
Dry CO₂ at STP: P₂ = 760 mmHg, V₂ = ? mL, T₂ = 273 K

For a fixed amount of gas: P₁V₁/T₁ = P₂V₂/T₂
Then, V₂ = V₁ × (P₁/P₂) × (T₂/T₁)

Volume of dry CO₂ at STP, V₂ = (42.6 mL) × [(764 - 19.8) / 760] × [273 / (273 + 22)] = 38.6 mL
