If it is a Group IIA metals other than Be (Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra), the atom can form metallic bond (i.e. in pure metal or its alloy) and ionic bonds (for example, MgO which contains Mg²⁺ and O²⁻ ions).

If it is a transition metal or Be, the atom can form metallic bond (i.e. in pure metal or its alloy), ionic bond (e.g. ZnO which contains Zn²⁺ and O²⁻ ions) or covalent bond (e.g. each CrO₃ molecule contains 3 Cr=O bonds).

Ionic bonds ... Mg + Cl2 form MgCl2 /// the metal, Mg, has valence 2 e-, and the nonmetal, Cl, has 2 val. e- for each atom ... the form an ionic bond .. the Mg 'loses' its electrons forming a pos. 2 ion and the Cl 'gains' electrons forming 2 neg 1 ions. These opposite charges attract .. that is an ionic bond.
