What is the exponential function modeled by the following table?

x f(x)
2 10
3 28
4 82

1) f(x) = 2x

2) f(x) = 2x + 1

3) f(x) = 3x

4) f(x) = 3x + 1

assuming the points are:

(x, y)
2, 10
3, 28
4, 82

Plug the first pair into equation to elimiate:

1) f(x) = 2x
10 = 2(2)
10 = 4
FALSE, so equation 1 is out.

2) f(x) = 2x+1
10 = 2(2) + 1
10 = 5
FALSE, so equation 2 is out.

3) f(x) = 3x
10 = 3(2)
10 = 6
FALSE, so equation 3 is out.

4) f(x) = 3x + 1
10 = 3(2) + 1
10 = 7
FALSE, so equation 4 is out.

The reality is that none of these equations fit.

The given data does not fit an exponential function. An exponential function has the form y = ab^x, for some fixed values of a and b.

The four given options are not exponential functions, they're linear, and none of them matches the given data.

f(x) = 3^x + 1 fits the given data, but that's not an exponential function, it's the sum of an exponential function and a constant. Also that doesn't match any of the given answers (unless answer #4 was missing the exponent sign).

Ans 4)

2^2 = 4 <=> 10
2^2+1 = 5 <=> 10
3^2 = 9 <=> 10
3^2+1 = 9+1 = 10 THis is the one
