Stopping the sales of cigarettes to teens has not kept them from smoking , but banning smoking in public places has.
請問知識大大們,此句的but 後面為什麼是接Ving(banning)呢?banning後面的smoking是名詞,還是因為ban後面要加ing變動名詞呢?謝謝:)

✔ 最佳答案
那是因為需要與 "Stopping the sales..."(分詞片語)來對比.

X has not kept them from smoking, but Y has.

where
X = Stopping the sales of cigarettes to teens
Y = banning smoking in public places

X,Y的結構都是 <現在分詞>+<受詞>

participial-adjective=分詞狀的分詞形容詞的硯在分詞.
prisoner's分詞片語,鎬錯.石破天鷺亦説他錯.

Participles, gerunds, and infinitives are the three types of verbals.

"Stopping the sales of cigarettes to teens" and "banning smoking in public places" are both GERUND phrase (not 分詞片語) acting as noun, the subject of the independent clauses.

The sentence is a compound sentence. A, but B. (A & B are independent clause and "but" is the coordination conjunction)

The verb "ban" is a transitive verb, so it must take an object. "smoking in public place" is a gerund (動名詞) phrase, acting as the object of the gerund "banning".
