I had my camera for a while and haven t really used it but now I m starting to use it more and I want new lenses. What is a good starter lens do you recommended? I have a canon t3i. I also like taking both portraits and landscapes as well as closeup shots! Basically anything good for the gram :)

Agree with what's been said. I think what you're really asking for is for a lens that is optically superior to the cheap kit lenses that come with cameras such as the 18-55mm.

You can find out how much sharper one lens is over another by going to photozone.de. They use numerical values in their sharpness charts so you can see exactly how much sharper one lens is over another. This will help you determine if you really should spend the money on another lens and whether it's worth the expense. For example, Canon and Tamon both have f/2.8 zooms. The Canon is sharper than the Tamron, which one would expect considering that the Tamron lens is $499 and the Canon cost about $1,600. However, once you see that there's only a 10% difference in sharpness between the two, all of a sudden the cheaper, less sharp Tamron become the logical choice.

Before buying anything, go out and use what you already have. When out & about, keep in mind what your current lens isn't allowing you to do. If you can't zoom in on far-away objects as much as you'd like, then you now know you need a telephoto lens. If you can't fill the frame up with that flower, then you now know you need to get a macro lens. Before you go out spending money on a lens to solve your photographic problems, you must identify the problem first. Otherwise you're likely to end up with gear that you won't use.

Avoid amazon.com, and go to camera websites like adorama.com or bhphotovideo.com. All camera brands have pricing policies so everyone sells Nikon/Canon gear for the same exact price. You can save some cash by buying not from Amazon, but from B&H who doesn't charge sales tax like Amazon does.

There is no beginner lens. There are general purpose lenses however like the Sigma 18-300mm and the Tamron 16-300mm.

Believe it or not, you can do portraits, landscapes and closeup (headshots?) with the 18-55mm kit lens. You should have that lens when you bought the camera. If by closeup you meant macro, you would need to buy a macro lens specific for that purpose.
