It isn't exploding batteries that is the problem, it is the fire afterwards. The explosion is a sort of fizzy bang. Put one in your pocket with a bunch of keys and your sperm count goes down as a result of the fire after the bang, just like sex.

It takes a lot more than leaving them sitting around, that's for sure.

One of the most likely causes of an explosion would be
charging cells that were not made to be charged;
a less likely cause would be overcharging rechargeables.
Most modern chargers are Very Unlikely to do that.

Really, you probably have a greater chance of being killed by a home-invasion robber
than having a AA cell explode ---
and if one Did explode, it would do no worse than blow off a couple of fingers
if you were holding it at the time.

In nearly 70 years in Britain I have not seen a press report or heard a media report of any AA batteries exploding.
