Can I make an extention cord to run my well pump from a generator?

First of all, I'm not an electrician. I don't have the money right now to have a transfer switch installed. I'm thinking ahead, if the power goes out in the winter I just need to be able to drip my pipes so they don't freeze. I have a generator with pleanty of power, 240 volt outlet. My well looks like it's just plugged into the wall with a nema 6-20r type plug. The box says 230 volt, 1/2 he. I have the female end, 15 feet of 10/3 cord and a 240 volt male end to hook up to my generator. Could I just wire an extension cord together to run my well? If so, how? I'm not sure I could hard wire it to the box, that may be beyond me and a suicide plug is not something I'm comfortable with

The plug on your generator is likely a NEMA L14-20R or L14-30R, it has an additional neutral connection that the 6-20 doesn't. If you have the cord ends and look at the screws you will notice the nema 6 doesn't have a silver screw, just 2 gold and a green, while the 4 terminal generator plug has an additional silver screw. Those colors are intentional, green is ground, silver is neutral, golds are hots.

You could easily make an adapter cord, match the available screw colors. Use a 3 wire cord. On the male generator plug connect green wire to green screw, black to one gold screw, and white wire to other gold screw, and no wire to silver screw. On the Nema 6 do the same.

You could buy one pre-made http://amzn.to/2qoNYlY

If you have a 220 pump use #10 gauge wire and if you have a 115 volt pump then #12 romex is OK. JUST go slow and make good connections to the plug-in to connect to the generator ... If your power goes off you MUST trip the breaker so when it comes back on you do not have double voltage going to pump ...

240v 1/2 hp motor only draws about 6 to 7 amps [on both hot lines] so that should work fine. when the power is out, you can just unplug the pump and then plug it into your home made 240v extension cord. For that low amperage and distance, 10/3 will work fine. you do need to take some care to keep the ends out of the wet

It CAN be done, but BUYING an extension cord rated for the job will actually cost LESS than buying the parts to make your own.
