How do you ask a family member if their relative just passed away?

My second cousin just posted a "RIP" message along with a photo of an elderly man. She did not state the man s name, but my immediate conclusion was that he was my mother s uncle (so my second cousin s grandfather). How can I ask this without sounding insensitive/impolite, especially considering the fact that me not recognizing my own great uncle might be weird?

Just don't mention the photo. Just say you heard someone in the family died but didn't want to butt in to the conversation so you decided to phone someone and ask.

If you didn't care about them while they were alive, why do you care about them now they're dead?

Give your cousin my condolences.
