Best camera for indie filmmakers?

I've been into making short films for years now but I would only use my phone to record, because I've never had the money to purchase an actual camera. I want to get serious about filmmaking and I even plan to take the cinema and film college courses when I graduate high school. I don't know much about cameras though and I want to buy a good camera for short films. I want a camera that has at least 1080P and would look professional if I were to use it for film festivals or youtube, and is preferable under $1000. Thanks!

Without question, avoid any and all digital still cameras. You must buy a camcorder. At a budget of only $1,000, no still camera will be able to compare to a camcorder in that price range. You can get a 4K camcorder for less than $1,000, but you'd need to spend $3,000 if you wanted a DSLR to do it, and it's going to be worse than a camcorder.
Take a look at what Sony or Panasonic have to offer in a 4K camcorder and go with that. Or, if you want more value, buy used. A used $1,000 camcorder is going to outperform a new one at the same price.

This is the nearest thing to what you're looking for but a bit above your budget.
