This isn't sleep paralysis...What is it?

This is the second time in one night this has happened to me. I am ABOUT to fall asleep and then the lights shut off and I can feel the presence of something shaking me and holding me. Now when this happened the second time I was lying on my side and I pulled the sheets over me because I was like, "why did the lights randomly shut off why did it randomly get dark?" I have a roommate and I was so scared but I could MOVE. I've had sleep paralysis before this is something different it happened when I was about to fall asleep. Answers please? Happened twice when I was laying on my side and I could move. It was holding and shaking me

While not paralysis, the shaking could still be related to a hypnagogic hallucination. In the state immediately before falling asleep, hallucinations are much more common. What's interesting about this state is that it's hard to know what is real or imagined.

That said, the "lights shutting off" could be a clue. Were they on before you started the process of going to sleep, then they were off after this undoubtedly woke you up? If so, your roommate could have been messing with you. Ask him or her! Or use your best judgment.

I'd also recommend not going to sleep with the lights on as you'll sleep more naturally in darkness.
