Is there a way to stop my menstrual cycle for a few years?

I am 16 and have painful periods. I am not sexually active but would like to stop my menstrual cycle for a while as it gets in the way of my academics. I ve had to take days off school because of severe cramps and I just hate the overall uncomfortableness of a period. I obviously also don t want a child anytime soon so am interested to know if there are any safe options.

You can't interfere in natures rule. You can delay periods for two weeks maximum for a month by birth control pills, but not for a long time, it may be harmful. Before you go for any such step, discuss with gynecologist in detail, and regarding painful period too.

While I appreciate that menstrual cycles are inconvenient, you are contemplating a serious health hazard by interfering with the nature of your body.

Medicine is not so developed or exact of a science that it can switch off the complex cascade of female hormones for a few days (let alone years) and then switch it back on with no side effects. You risk many kinds of cancer (ovarian, breast, uterine, pancreas, kidney, pituitary) and other ailments if you were successful in doing so.

Instead, you would be far better off improving your self care to minimize the discomfort. Be sure you are:
* eating mostly nutritious whole foods (ever hear of S.A.D.? Standard American Diet. Garbage food.)
* getting 30 to 60 minutes of light to moderate exercise at least three days per week
* getting at least 7 hours of restful sleep each night
* consider nutritional supplements described in the second source

Try the Bar, its a little bar in your arm that releases something as a contraceptive. it also disables periods for up to two years. Relatively inexpensive

Most girls/women get an IUD in this instance when they have horrible periods.

Ask your doctor.

Yes, many birth controls almost or completely stop it, you need to talk to a GYN physician or clinician.

Birth control pills can help regulate your cycle, as well as help tone down painful cramps. You can even skip periods for a while, but it is healthy for your body to keep in check with it's natural balances. Yes, with birth control, you can skip periods and even have a period four times per year or so, instead of 12. If you want to make sure your body still feels it's regularity, but tone down on pain and irregularity, you can go for birth control.
