If number of rows + R, then seats per row = (R + 8)

Total seats = R (R + 8)

So R(R + 8) = 884

R² + 8R - 884 = 0

(R - 26) (R + 34) = 0

R = 26

It can be convenient to solve these by considering the average of the number of seats per row and the number of rows. Let "a" represent that average. Then you have
.. (a -4)(a +4) = 884 . . . . rows*(seats/row) = 884
.. a^2 -16 = 884
.. a^2 = 900
.. a = √900 = 30
The number of rows is 30 -4 = 26.

x [ x + 8 ] = 884
x² + 8x - 884 = 0
[ x - 26 ] [ x + 34 ] = 0
x = 26 seats per row
