How many traditional Chinese characters are there?

I am in the process of learning Mandarin Chinese and I have compared the scripts of simplified versus traditional Chinese characters. It seems like, when looking at traditional Chinese writing, that most of the characters are the same as in the simplified Chinese writing, usually only one or two characters in a giver sentence are different/more complex. I was wondering if anyone knows how many traditional characters there are that actually differ from simplified characters?

According to the data released by Wikipedia/zh-tw, the China Government unveiled the policy to simplify the writing system in 1956, which made 2274 traditional Chinese words simplified.
… 1956年中華人民共和國政府頒布《漢字簡化方案》,希望透過漢字簡化逐步達成廢除漢字改行拉丁文的目標。1964年《簡化字總表》共收2274個簡化字 …
I am here in Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Education,
The number of commonly used words is 4808.
The number of less commonly used words is 6341.
The number of seldom used words is 18388.
常用國字標準字體表,簡稱甲表,是中華民國教育部於1979年出版的常用字和字體標準,內收4808字。
次常用國字標準字體表,簡稱乙表,是中華民國教育部於1982年12月出版的次常用字和字體標準,內收6341字。
罕用國字標準字體表,簡稱丙表,是中華民國教育部於1983年10月出版的罕用字和字體標準,內收18388字.
Point is what you say (…usually only one or two characters in a giver sentence are different/more complex) is totally right. Which results in a reasonable estimation that among the 2235 simplified words, there are a lot of words, I guess, belong to the less commonly used or seldom used words.
Another point is that, here in Taiwan, we have less difficulties reading the book written before 1964. But people in Mainland China, unless they delve into the Traditional Characters, they might have some difficulties reading the books written before 1964.

Thousands, or even tens of thousands. That is why they use a simplified version. Even many Chinese cannot read, and write their own language fully.
