Is an online raffle illegal?

I am trying to read up a bit on the legalities of this however getting confused.

If I held an online raffle where the ticket price was £1 and the prize was two tickets to a show. The customer buys a ticket and pays £1 on the website through paypal (or something similar) they get an email which will represent as a ticket.

1000 people entered and a winner was chosen at random.

I then put the £1000 back into the company and do it again. I pay myself a percentage of the takings.

Is that illegal? If so why and is there any way of getting around it?

Yes, it's legal but there are usually laws that regulate what you can and cannot do and, of course, there are taxes to pay on any profits.

You need a licence to run any raffle in the UK
