I know you gave a best answer which was deserved, but please read this article to realize (how lucky) you are to have (only) $4,000 in student loans.
My husband (deceased) and a lawyer for over 45 years in sole practice, when in a divorce would decide how much a spouse "might" owe to cover their childrens education. Back about 20 years ago, the cost for a state school might cost on average of $5,000 per year, but now in 2017, those same schools might cost $20,000, or the (prior) cost of 4 years for 1 year total.
Student loans, like child support or taxes can't be dischargeable in bankruptcy, so no matter what you have to pay, until you die.
