So I just adopted a neutered siamese mix, he s about a year old. He has rather quickly introduced himself to my eight year old calico who has a very big personality for such a small cat.

They seemed to be adjusting well to each other, there have yet to be any major conflicts outside of my calico hissing at him every now and again. However, this morning my calico did something rather strange.

They were both on the landing at the top of the stairs and he walked up to her and sniffed her. She responded as she has before with a soft hiss (as if to say "you re too close to me"). So he stood there a moment, and she licked him a few times really quickly, then hissed at him again but really softly as he went on his merry way. Neither of them growled, puffed up, or swatted at each other.

I just don t understand why she would hiss, then lick him, then hiss at him again.

Any and all cat behavioral expertise is welcome. Thanks!

Sounds like they are getting along just fine. More important than vocalization with cats and dogs is body language...your calico groomed him a bit and then sent him on his way...they are making friends.

Cats are stupid. That's why.

She is telling him "you are in my space and I don't like it. You can be here, but not in my space."

Its like a little kid pouting but dealing with it, and muttering under their breath.

They are getting to know each other. Hissing is a way of setting boundaries.

I'm not an expertise but I've been living with cats for over 10 years now and I'd say it's quite normal, usually no real meaning
