I went on a school trip and I went to a store and decided to get this cup to my Chinese teacher (she teaches Chinese at my high school) but before I give it to her I want to know what it means.
更新1:

And just to let you know my teacher will be able to read it. She's actually from Taiwan so she can read Traditional Chinese.

This is not Chinese, it's a shortened version of a Japanese proverb: 七転び八起き/fall down seven times,
get up eight."

Proof half way down the page in the source.

“七轉八起”
If we Taiwanese/Chinese people see this phrase is a Chinese proverb, then
Japanese people have reasons to complain. Because I have never seen this phrase used in newspaper or normal conversation in early years.
According to what I have just read on internet. I can see it’s a Japanese proverb with an easy-understood meaning, which means even if you fall down 7 times you need to stand up (this is especially true when we learn how to ride a bicycle) and pick up anything left on the ground. Besides Taiwan was controlled by Japan for 50 years, another reason is we are so close to Japan, we get some influences from Japan in culture and wording. Because this 4 words are everyday-used words, even without checking the Internet, I think at least one third of the people, can guess its meaning correctly and accept its usage.
Oh, I am an English learner the English writing migh be poor.
But I learn more from your questions and through the practice of writing

First of all, your Chinese teacher might not know what it means because most Chinese people from mainland China can only read simplified Chinese. Judging by the number of strokes in this character, it looks a lot like it could be traditional, a writing system that only those from the Republic of China can read or comprehend. Now, I do not know Chinese myself, but I have a girlfriend that is Chinese and I can have her try to decipher it and then update the answer once she does.
