Yes, they is, especially after the 1960s, because of air pollution regulations.

Yes two stroke engine have not usually been a success. Suzuki in the 1970s ran a 3 cylinder two stroke engine in their small 4wds and cars which I think was a 530cc engine. They were great little vehicles but the 4wds could only be run at about 80km/h (50mph) and I think their vans and cars could run at about 10mph faster. The engines were reliable but had a shorter life than four stroke engine cars before having to be rebuilt.
Many of the two stroke engines used in cars were very cheap and unreliable. The Russian Trabant comes to mind as they had a shocking reliability problems. They were built very cheaply as Russians at the time got very low wages and had to save for a long time to be able to afford one.
The big problem with two stroke engines is the pollution they put out. You see two stroke motorcycles and see smoke coming from the exhaust. The problem is in a two stroke engine is the oil is burned and some of the fuel is not burnt due to the way two stroke engines breathe and expel the burned gases. This causes pollution to be high from these engines and in modern countries where laws are in place on how much pollution a car can give out these engines just cannot run clean enough to be allowed to be used in cars. A guy called Ralph Sarich from Australia developed a fuel injection system that actually made them run much cleaner but likely would not meet todays strict emissions requirements. I believe an Indian car maker did use the system but it appears as so they no longer use it.
The Two stroke engine were great where you needed high power in a lightweight motor but the fact is they do not last as long as a four stroke before having to be rebuilt. Multi cylinder two stroke engines quite often need to be sent to a specialist for rebuilding as the crankshaft has to be pressed apart to change the crankcase seals and these people seem to charge exorbitant prices for their specialized abilities so from my experience the engines even though much simpler than four strokes are just as expensive to rebuild. But the pollution and the noise they put out as they run has basically relegated then to small kids motorbikes and motocross bikes and chainsaws and other small engine gardening tools, and a few small outboards.
