英文的動詞依照意思分為action verb和state verb兩種。發生在過去的action verb，如果時間點較重要時，會用「過去簡單式」；如果過程較重要時，則會用「過去進行式」。這裡的hang, carry, take都是action verb，依句意邏輯都是在表達「過程較重要」的狀況下，所以用「過去進行式」。

因被提及的奇怪男人在"過去的時間裡一直在外面閒逛，手中也一直拿著行李箱，又一直在拍照"，三項動作都是過去的"持續"行為，故使用過去進行式。

一般筒單式僅指一個事實且為時點，而進行式指一個時段且會短時間結束，另外進行式有強調語氣作用，例:I am feeling good.
