Why are some things farther away than others?

Here is a Buddhist koan. Two men watch as a flock of ducks fly by, and the first man asks the second, "Where are the ducks?" The second said, "They just flew away." The first man corrects him harshly, "No, the ducks are where they always were, and they passed us."

Because we exist in a manifold which posseses a local metric. Topologically speaking.

"farther" involves actual physical distance. "further" involves concepts.
