How will neutering a dog affect it's behavior and personality, if at all?

Will neutering reduce the tendency for the dog to want to mark its territory? Will it change his personality to make him less aggressive or less protective and less interested in us as pet-owners?

It won't alter it at all. All neutering a dog does makes it unable to breed. It will also not want to run after the scent of female dogs in heat which makes it less likely to wander. It does not make a dog "calmer". If you have a dog that is hyper and likes to see what is on the other side of the fence, neutering will not help this. If the dog tends to be aggressive, neutering will not help this. Neutering will not change behavior which is a result of genetics or poor training.

Castration is not brain surgery or is it something that can replace training. An intact male dog who's properly housebroke will not pee in the house even if lives with an intact b*tch who's in season. At one point, I owned a stud dog and three intact b*tches. He NEVER once peed in my house when they were in heat. For the most part, castration will not change his temperament either. A dog's temperament is guided by his core genetics.

Neutered males are less likely to display aggressive and territorial behaviors. They are less likely to wander or try to escape in search of or to get to a mate. They are less likely to mark. They won't sire any unwanted litters. You should be aware though, that neutering is not a magic fix for undesirable behaviors that have become habit, and even fixed animals can develop these behaviors if not properly trained. Appropriate training will be necessary to discourage undesirable behaviors even after neutering.

The ONLY guarantee with castration is no puppies, which if the dog is properly kept, shouldn't ever happen either. Castration isn't a cure all for problems - training is. People say castration doesn't alter a dog's personality etc,. but then go on to say they are calmer etc. If that's not an alteration, I don't know what is.

I too had entire males with entire bitches, and NO MARKING!!

It doesn't, and it will not magically solve any lack of training on the owners part, it only prevents procreation.
