What's the best way to conduct a long distance job search?

I live in NJ, though I really want to move to Los Angeles. Although I do have savings, I think it'll be too risky and stressful to quit my current job and just move. I want employers to take me seriously though if I apply from NJ.

Take a leave of absence or vacation time from your current job and go to L.A.
