Why do atheists think we evolved from apes? Isn't it more likely that we evolved from dogs since dogs are more intelligent than apes?

The intelligence of a dog is closer to the intelligence of humans than that of apes to humans. Humans also are able to form close relationships with dogs, but not with apes. God clearly intended us to be with dogs, not with apes. So, we probably evolved from dogs.

Apes are far more intelligent than dogs. Try teaching sign language to a dog, apes can learn sign language.

i thought we evolved from doughnuts.

Of course, leave it to a theist to measure intelligence on the ability to follow commands. Its hard being responsible for yourself and making your own decisions, isnt it? Pigs...pigs are more intelligent than dogs. But slightly less than apes. So maybe you evolved from pig. Im good with apes.

Atheists don't think that. Only stupid theists who ignore the science behind evolution think stupid things like that. Once again, man did not come from apes. Man and the great apes shared a common ancestor that was neither man nor ape. Got it?

We evolved from fish.

Dogs have average intelligence, with an Encephalization Quotient (EQ) of 1. EQ is a measure of how big one's brain is compared to how big it is expected to be based on body weight. In contrast chimps have an EQ close to 3, and humans have an EQ of 7. Therefore even if we use your logic, we are more likely to have evolved from an ape than from a dog. In fact, if we employ your logic, we should have evolved from a dolphin, since dolphins are more intelligent than apes, with an EQ around 5.

Intelligence is just 1 trait, and it is not a reliable one, as I just showed. Instead scientists look for traits that are more likely to have been uniquely shared by humans and other animals. For example, we share with apes such traits as nails (instead of claws), lack of a tail, a dry nose (dogs have wet noses), 2 nipples at the front part of the body (dogs have more than 2 nipples), opposable thumbs, eyes located at the front of the head, trichromatic (red, green and blue) vision, similarities in DNA and in serum albumin protein. These traits are unlikely to have independently evolved in apes and humans. They instead point to the existence of a recent common ancestor, from which apes and humans inherited these traits. There are other similarities I have not mentioned that are shared by apes and humans, but not by dogs or dolphins or other mammals, for example similarity in dental formula and the ability to brachiate, that makes it even less likely that we evolved from any other animal except an ape. The mountain of evidence available therefore suggests that our closest relatives are apes. And since human fossils are dated much younger than apes and ape-man, the rational and reasonable conclusion is that we evolved from an ape.

I usually can't stand this kind of troll, but he has a Bob Dobbs avatar, so he gets a pass.

Read a science book, for crying out loud.

Humans and dogs do share a common ancestor.

"Why do atheists think we evolved from apes?"

We do not "think" our ancestors were ancient apes. This is scientific fact. We evolved from ancient apes as did our cousins the chimpanzee apes. Also, like the chimps we are still apes.

This is all fact. Facts are not opinions.

You obviously are an uneducated moron.

Disco Pickle- You DO know you're using Bob Dobbs, "founder" of The Church of The Sub-Genius, a group that makes fun of organized faith, as your avatar, don't you?

how many dogs do you know that can learn sign language? i know of none, apes can and have learned sign language.look up the ape koko..

Why do atheists think we evolved from apes?

- We don't, idiot fundies who have absolutely no idea what they are talking about think that.

Isn't it more likely that we evolved from dogs since dogs are more intelligent than apes?

- Like I said, idiot fundies.

Dogs are no where near as intelligent as apes. Apes can be trained to use computers, to count, to recognize colors and patterns, etc. And we've found a lot of primitive hominid creatures that no longer exist. Some were in closer resemblance to apes while others looked more like modern humans. Have you ever actually looked at an ape? The resemblance to humans is astounding. I think it's pretty much common knowledge that evolution has occurred; to everyone that isn't brainwashed by ancient religions at least.

Why are unchristian fundamentalists so uneducated and frightened of reality?

Primates are mammals that include lemurs, monkeys, apes and humans.

The Strepsirrhini, or “wet-nosed” primates, which include lemurs and lorises, branched off around 63 million years ago.

Old World monkeys and apes divided from New World monkeys about 40 million years ago.

Aegyptopithecus zeuxis, which probably resembles the common ancestor of New World monkeys and apes, lived about 29 million years ago.

The apes split from Old World monkeys about 25 million years ago.

Humans and chimpanzees diverged 5-7 million years ago.

Of the macaque's nearly 3 billion DNA base pairs, 93.5 per cent are identical to those in the human genome. This is not unexpected for a species whose lineage diverged from our own about 25 million years ago. The human and chimp genomes, which diverged just 6 million years ago, are about 98 per cent identical.

One puzzling discovery is that several mutations that cause genetic diseases in humans - such as phenylketonuria and Sanfilippo syndrome, which lead to mental retardation - are the normal form in macaques and, presumably, our own ancestors.

So on each split the original got left behind to stay as it was!

The first true hominid has been shown to almost certainly arrived in the Great Rift Valley but as a product of evolving from it's monkey and ape ancestry!!

Which extremist sect or cult indoctrinated you to believe that God was not clever enough to use the big bang, evolution and science as his tools?

Pope Francis says the theories of evolution and the Big Bang are real and God is not “a magician with a magic wand” putting an end to the “pseudo theories” of creationism and intelligent design! So the Catholic Church, Church of England and mainstream churches all accept the big bang and evolution!

Lord Carey the former Archbishop of Canterbury put it rather well – “Creationism is the fruit of a fundamentalist approach to scripture, ignoring scholarship and critical learning, and confusing different understandings of truth”!

So a dog has learned to communicate with man using sign? Feel free to show me a human who has learned to effectively communicate with another species!

Your generation came from a dog

I'm atheist and I find both scenarios quite stupid honestly...
All's I really know is I don't believe in what religious people consider a "god", and that's what I thought what being an atheist was...
Where, what, or who we came from and where we go once we are gone, I don't know, and that's 2 things I will never have to worry about because I don't care, that's the joy of being an atheist, i'm not on this planet to worry about things I have no control over, so i'm not going to.
That's the best I can do to answer your question, but a fair bit of advice regarding the matter. Humans are only close to dogs because we domesticated an animal (most likely wolves) into the dogs we know today. If humans were to domesticate apes, in the future we could have domesticated a new "mans best friend". The same goes from pretty much every animal people own as a pet... Everything started out wild, humans were the ones that tamed them over time.
2017-03-09 11:43 am
We learned to hunt from wolves.
2017-03-09 11:49 am
we evolved from humans. There were no ape/men.

There are many theories out there that attempt to explain the origins of mankind: Creation, evolution, aliens, etc.

One thing all theories have in common is the self-assertion of human intelligence.

The universe doesn't recognize our concept of intelligence much like the universe doesn't recognize the difference between order and chaos. The assumption that we are intelligent and this somehow makes us special is exclusive to humans.

The comet that killed the dinosaurs didn't recognize that they were at the top of the food chain. A mosquito infected with Zika virus won't avoid biting you because you believe you are intelligent.

Whether your theory that we evolved from dogs is accurate really isn't that important when you compare it to the fact that there is no independently verifiable means to support the declaration that we are intelligent. It is all confirmation bias.

Essentially, we are smart because we say so. God exists and created the universe because we say so.

It follows, therefore, that if enough people believed that "we evolved from dogs" it would also be true because we say so!
