Is a criminologist an actual career? What exactly do they do and where?

Do criminologists work in like police departments or anything where crimes are being investigated? I dont want to be a college professor like I want to take part in solving crimes. Like I would like to collect data and view the evidence and come with whatever theories there may be or something of the sort.

Yes there are research positions. Did you ever take a sociology course?

Criminologists do not directly investigate crimes in most cases. The work you are describing is that of a police detective- to become one of those, you need to join a police department as a uniformed officer and then work your way up to the detective branch (this can take years and is highly dependent on how many positions, if any, are available).

Criminologists study crime on a more academic basis. They would study things like trends in crime, what causes crime, which policies to prevent crime actually work, and so forth.

Not really

This is one of those majors that third rate schools offer to idiots who watch a lot of TV. Very few departments allow non-cops to investigate crimes.
