Much worse.

I think life was dangerous, full of disease, lacked human rights/women's rights, and full of superstitions. Most people were illiterate. Overall, it wasn't something I'd want to experience. We complain now, but society is far more decent (scary, I know) than it was then.

By todays references no but if it was all one knew then it would seem to be the pinnacle of life and existence.

Nothing new under the sun. Whatever you are going through others have gone through as well.
