There used to be the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. That's what my old Social Security card used to say, before my wallet was stolen some years ago. If they abolish the Dept of Ed., it won't make the machinery go away. It will be relocated to another department. I mean, they can't just do away with Pell Grants, federal student loans, No Child Left Behind regulations (which are an act of Congress from the GW Bush administration), and other bureaucratic necessities. They have to go somewhere. It's like, Congress can vote to abolish the Veterans Affairs department, but VA hospitals won't disappear into thin air.

edit: Yeah, Congress can vote to end all those programs, but it's very difficult, and a different matter than simply demoting Education from the Cabinet level.

It's a great idea.

For starters, education is none of the federal government's business: 10th amendment.

Secondly, government cannot be trusted with the compulsory indoctrination of the population. The predictable results will be a population like the typical liberal: brainwashed to the point of docile stupidity. Believing government can cure the sick "free", and fine-tune the weather, that gender is a legislative construct, that no-one as a right to their own income, that government should run a monopoly of money and credit, that no-one has a right to any freedom but requires the government's permission.

Thirdly, it is better handled by the States. There is no reason why every child's mind should be regarded as first and foremost the property of some unelected socialist bureaucrat in Washington.

Fourthly, socialism cannot be justified. It is an irrational and unethical belief system based on violence and double-talk at EVERY stage, which is why the defenders of government education *always* lie by confusing it with education.

Human beings have right. Government departments don't have rights. And there is no such thing as a right to physically threaten or attack people to force them to submit to violations of their own freedom and property.

If government education is so good, people will voluntarily pay for it; which we know is a laughable concept.

I think it's at least due an overhaul that puts more power back in states' hands. It's been a disaster as is.

Education is an individual pursuit.

The EPA is also waiting in the gallows! Death by guillotine!

Trump's plan is to reduce the employment of these departments and he will not need Congressional approval to do so. He will weaken these Departments/Programs by means of attrition.

They are certainly doing a terrible job. They spend more on education than any other nation, but get results that are worse than many third-world nations. They spend six times more per student than the average private school, but again, they get consistently worse results. Either the department needs to be overhauled, or it needs to be abolished and our educational system privatized.

Great idea. Since the Dept of Education was created, the costs of education has widely outpaced inflation, as have the number of employees in schools and especially the number of non-teachers employed by schools at all levels, yet academic achievement has not improved one whit.

And poor children have even less quality education available to them than they did 40 years ago.

And not only are US high schools graduating students who cannot read or do math at a 12th grade level, such underachievement has now affected colleges, who are graduating students who cannot think.

Perhaps it should not only be eliminated but the buildings torn down and strewn with salt to prevent it from ever rising again.

To dump the Ed dept can only help. America has been greatly dumbed down by gov't sticking it's nose in an area it does not belong. In 1850 citizens spoke a minimum of 2 languages, some as many as 4 or 5. About 1910 the agency started to realize through it's rules it could make "lemmings" out of the kids by limiting what they learn. -- We also have to dump the stifling effects of the EPA,whose regulations are ruining the economy

Dept. of Education is antiquated for its official purposes. It serves mostly as a department of communist propaganda.

Defund and shut down Dept. of Education, or at least modernize it like Sweden and New Zealand.

We are about the stupidest of the developing nations. we have to kill all the lawyers.

Fine. The federal government doesn't have the Consitutional authority over education anyway, and it should never have been created in the first place. Education was much higher quality pre-DOE. Let the states handle it.

Half of Trumps cronies want to kill the department they are in charge of. Bad idea.

Bad idea, even with billionaire barbie in charge of it. We can fix the damage she does after 2020. Although I think parents with school aged children should move to democratic controlled states where education will remain strong even with F*ckface Von Clownstick in the white house.
