Consider the diatomic molecule oxygen O2which is rotating in the xy plane about the z
axis passing through its center, perpendicularto its length. The mass of each oxygen atom
is 2.66 × 10−26 kg, and at room temperature, the average separation distance between the two oxygen atoms is 2.12 × 10−10 m (treat the atoms as point masses). If the angular speed of the molecule about the z axis is 3.94 × 1012 rad/s, what is its rotational kinetic energy?Answer in units of J.

✔ 最佳答案
rot KE = ½Iω² = ½*mr²ω² = ½*2m(d/2)²ω² = md²ω²/4
where d is the separation distance. So
rot KE = 2.66e-26kg * (2.12e-10m)² * (3.94e12rad/s)² / 8
rot KE = 4.64e-21 J

Hope this helps!
