What job would you rather?

Right now I m in a bind. I m currently working full time at a trucking company as a mechanic. The job I do isn t hard, and I have a lot of down time to play on my phone and talk to the co workers because of how quickly I get my job done. But I put in an application to another place and I have an interview scheduled for next Friday, now I m having second thoughts. My friend works there and says its great. Its a textile mill, and it will be a lot louder then where I am now, I ll have a lot less down time to mess around and will most likely have to work harder to keep the machines making fabric. Though, I ll have every 3rd week off, sometimes Fridays, very rare overtime, I ll get paid $2.50 more an hour and its closer. What would you do? I m friends with everyone I currently work with, and everyone there will be a stranger except for my friend which will be working a different shift. But I wouldn t mind every 3rd week off because I can afford it and a 9 day weekend would be nice. I m just in a bind trying to figure out what I want, and I d like other peoples opinions on what they would do. Thank you!

Making job decisions based on how easy it is and how much time you have to play on your phone seems to indicate a lack of ambition for a better life overall. You shouldn't have any hesitation taking a job that pays more and provides you additional skills, even if the work is harder.

I understand the hesitancy - the unknown. However, it sounds like a great opportunity. Go for the new job. However, leave your current job on good terms so that if the new job does not work out, the old job may take you back. When you turn in your notice, tell them how much you have enjoyed working there and what a great company they are to work for but, a friend works at this other place and convinced you to apply and it was an offer just too good to turn down.

One week off every month will use up most of the extra $2.50 per hour you'd get during the other weeks. You'll save a bit on transportation costs, though.

I think a job as a truck mechanic would be a lot more flexible and would be in demand more places than a textile mill mechanic.

It depends on your priorities: A job that's portable and has a future, or a little better income, or more leisure time even during working hours.
