So long story short a guy called me about my stolen computer and he called on a private/blocked number. And if he calls again I want to make sure I have evidence incase it goes to court or to show the police.

I agree with, Mary. Call your local police and ask them. Make sure you write down the name of who you spoke to and the exact advice they give you. This way if you are asked why you did what the police told you to do you have proof of who told you how to handle the situation.

No, but if you don't tell them you're recording the conversation it is likely to be inadmissable as evidence in a legal case. Check your local statutes.
