The "National Anthem" being played before a sporting event began in 1943 during WWII, that's WW two, not WW eleven. Baseball owners thought if they showed "patriotism" by playing the "National Anthem" before their games the government wouldn't shut them down for the duration.

Eventually the practice was picked by other professional sports then colleges and high schools, then for every sporting event in every country in the world.

It's become a tired cliche. It does nothing and serves no purpose. If someone needs the "National Anthem" to instill pride, patriotism, and love of country in him/her, he/she is one hopeless dude/dudess. It's a complete waste of time.
