when magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid it is a vigorous, fizzing, spitting reaction. The decrease in the reading on the balance was very small. why is it a good idea to include a cotton wool bung in the neck of the flask when carrying out this experiment?

To prevent any of the solution from splattering out of the open flask.
