Method 1 :

The range of Σ is from 1 to 42.

Mean of x
= (Σx)/42
= 1134/42
= 27

The sum of squared deviations
= Σ(x - 27)²
= Σ(x² - 54x + 27²)
= Σx² - 54Σx + 42*27²
= 35736 - 54*1134 + 42*27²
= 5118

The sum of square deviations
= Σx² - [(Σx)²/n]
= 35736 - [1134²/n]
= 5118
