I have been told that women prefer personality than looks is that true or a big lie?

It's a bit of a curve. Teens/20's and mid 30's, women are after looks more than anything. After their first divorce from the hot hunk that didn't have 2 brain cells to rub together, they start looking for what matters. Intelligence. Personality. Loyalty.

And to be honest, guys are the same way.

You have to be at least average looking. If you are butt ugly, personality isn't going to help a whole lot. A huge bank balance could help, though.

We prefer to feel an attraction toward a guy before we consider interest or dating them, etc.... it's all about human sex pheromones. Attraction doesn't guarantee compatibility but it's usually how things get started between a guy and girl.

Most of us prefer a guy who behaves like a gentleman..... obviously!
