How can I become a journalist in the U.K.?

Do I need to go to university? Is it the kind of job you can work up to in an office or working for the local paper? It's something I have always been interested in and English is really my strong point. I got A Level grade C at sixthform college but I left school 9 years ago now and am nearly 28. Am I too old?

Journalists are mostly freelance workers. So this isn't likely to be a full time job. I know that you can become a journalist after an apprenticeship in journalism but I don't know how many apprenticeships there are. What experience of journalism do you have? Do you write articles for any hobby magazines or did you write articles for a newspaper at school?

Journalism is very competitive and so to get a job you have to have shown interest in it. You aren't really going to get anywhere if you think that you will learn how to become a journalist in a university course. You need to have already done writing for magazines at school or work or for a hobby before you go to university. When you consider that there are already enough people working in journalism jobs in the UK you will have to be extremely good at it to break in and you can't get that good just by doing a university course.

Most newspapers and magazines want a degree. You can however talk to your local newspaper and see what they say.
