Turmeric causing allergic reaction?

Someone I know has facet joint pain and they've been taking turmeric to reduce the swelling. The only problem is I think that they are allergic to it and have chronic itching? I have an interest in medicine so I'm really wondering about if there are any cures, to have the affect but not itch, or should they consult to a doctor?
