Is it really dangerous to light a cigarette near aviation fuel?

So a couple of months ago I was standing in line near the plane ready to board it and this guy a little way behind me, acting kind of clown-ish, had been cussing really loudly at every airport worker he passed by - security, boarding card people etc, - about the fact smoking was prohibited. Everybody in the line taking the same flight as him was like 'please SHUT UP'. When we got outside near the plane he lit a cigarette and this airport ground-control guy practically ran up to him and yelled at him to put it out or he'd get arrested right there. This sounds kind of a stupid question but why was that? Is it really risky to smoke near to a plane, or is it just a general precaution - what could happen?

Obviously, near the fuel it is a major risk. Jet A and Jet A-1 fuels contain kerosene which has up to 25% being aromatic hydrocarbons. The vapor is easily ignited.

As for fuel vapors being out on the ramp, it is rather likely actually. The fuel connectors during refueling spill a little fuel and a bit of vapors everytime they are connected or disconnected.

The fuel tanks vent air (which contains a saturated mixture of fuel vapors) during fueling and as the fuel warms from being in a wing tank warmer than the underground fuel storage system.

Aircraft which are parked long term tend to have full fuel in them (to prevent absorbing or attracting water vapor) and so drip on warm days as the fuel expands.

There is *no* reason why anyone should have any open flame or lit smoking materials near areas where there might be fuel vapor.

The ground crewman is justified in forcibly extinguishing spark sources. The potential downside is that the aircraft, fuel trucks, and part of the underground fuel system might explode or ignite. The potential upside is that someone smokes and nothing explodes.

Aviation fuel is kerosene. It's nothing like as volatile as petrol and you'd be hard pressed to light it even if you wanted to. It's a light oil.

Kerosene is not particularly flammable, but any vapour / air mixture would be very flammable. So the best thing is, if you see somebody smoking in what might be a vapour /air mixture, is to throw liquid kerosene onto them. Strange but true.

Jet fuel fumes are MUCH LESS likely and dangerous than gasoline (petrol) -
Jet fuel is basically the same as diesel fuel -
Diesel fuel with anti.icing additive -

At Air Force bases - there are signs near airplanes saying NO SMOKING WITHIN 50 FT -

Aviation fuel is extremely flammable. If even a spark caught it, kaboom.

Yes it is a precaution against the plane blowing up.

Yes. It might explode since the fuel evaporates into gas and can lead to injury or even death

Hmm! Naa... try it, you'll love it
