Sodium belongs to Period 3 of the Periodic Table and thus each sodium atom has 3 electronic shells filled with electrons, while oxygen belongs to Period 2 and thus each oxygen atom has only 2 electronic shells filled with electrons.

Sodium has a greater atomic size than oxygen because sodium has more electronic shells filled with electrons.
