My mom has spinal cord compression so doctors are debating surgery. She is 53 and has Crohn's disease, asthma, and various types of arthritis. If she doesn't have the surgery, she could be in a wheelchair in 5-10 years. If she does have it, there's a possibility she will be paralyzed, end up on a ventilator, or die. Plus, her pain won't be gone, it will only stop her from becoming fully wheelchair bound. To those who have had the surgery: how are you now? was there complications? To those just reading this: what decision would you make? Any advice/info is appreciated.

It can be very successful if done by a doctor with a good track record. Aftercare must be followed correctly. The arthritis could be a big problem if her bones don't heal correctly.

Can't say for your mom's situation. You didn't say what kind of surgery she's getting, only the location.

In the past, thoracic surgery on the spinal vertebra was much more of a risk. Now, most spinal surgeries are endoscopic and so they're not very invasive.

The risk lies in the anesthesia, not the surgery.

If you needed the surgery, you'd think the risk is worth the benefit. You're not the one in pain.
