I want to work as some sort of construction for the summer. I'm currently a sophomore in high school and my future is to be a structural engineer. Though engineering deals more with design, I feel like it's a necessity to have knowledge of the trades. With these thoughts, do you think if I were to apply for a blue collar job I'd get accepted despite the fact I'll be 16? If not, what job would you recommend? I reside in northwest Indiana

You are on the right track. Because you're just starting off in the working world, you might look into the smaller construction projects at first, like housing contractors in your home town. Plumbers, carpenters, and electricians probably couldn't afford to pay you much. But the general contractor for the job might be able to assign you here and there as needed, as a floater worker to help out specific subcontractors.

You can be employed by a construction company. You will likely be unable to operate the machinery until you are 18.
