Italian speakers: what does "cara" mean?

An Italian friend of mine texted me a good night with "cara" and then my name. Is this a word commonly used in Italy? Or is it an intimate word?

It means "dear" (in this context). It is feminine and singular. So, if used with your name, you should be a girl.

caro - is the masculine singular form.

If you ever saw an episode of "the Addams Family", Gomez often called Morticia, "cara mia" - "my dear" (literally: dear my)
