How to get expedited passport?

I am to travel within a week, and I just realized that my passport expired last month. On the government website there is an option for expedited passport, but I will be traveling by car, and do not have a hotel booked because I will be staying with friends, is there anything else I can use as proof to get the passport in time?

Make an appointment RIGHT NOW at a Regional Passport office. Call the 24 hour line

If you aren't flying, or staying commercially, take in copies of any emails or texts that you may have noting plans, along with names and addresses of the people with whom you expect to stay.
Get your photos and documents in order, and take in a minimum of $170 in CASH. Given that this is the time of year for emergency/unexpected expenditures, you may have to wait the entire day, or have it sent USPS Express back to you.
If you cannot actually go to an Agency, you can go through a service, which will increase $$$ cost.

You are so late now, your only option is to go in person to the Passport Agency in your state. Every state has one. You must CALL for an appointment at the agency & get your appointment registration number; be sure to have your registration confirmation number when you report to the Passport Agency.
You need your expired passport, current photo ID, completed application form for passport renewal, AND proof of travel such as airline confirmation & hotel booking confirmation, payment by check or credit card. These can be printed out from your email confirmation received when you book online. You can pick up your passport either later that afternoon, or the next day.
I had a business trip come up. Booked flight & hotel online, printed the confirmation, phoned for 1pm appt, got my "fat-book" (the one with the extra pages) passport at 3 pm.
Either do the necessary, or you not going to visit your friends for a few weeks. Why didn't you calendar passport renewal in your calendar for 6 months before expiration? Why didn't you check your passport before you set a date with your friends? It's not like you've been offered a job abroad & have a week to show up & start work, Fluffer-Nutter.
