At the start of the 20th century there were about 8,000 cars in britain.

They only appeared late in the 1890's

Barely anyone had an automobile, save someone who had personal connections to the then-fledging automobile companies, then located primarily in Germany, but plenty of London residents had horse-drawn buggies or coaches.
