Even if the replacement-level fertility rate of 2.1 were magically achieved globally tomorrow, the world population would keep growing for at least another 50 years. How can this be?

To translate RFR into population growth, many other factors need to be observed as well. Most important one is the female/male ratio. Assuming that all human population is fertile woman and somehow they can make babies without men, RFR of 2.0 will double the population every generation.
