What is the meaning of when someone says "put up or shut up?" Does it sound a bit odd?

It's a gambling reference, people. It worked it's way into colloquial speech.

This is a statement to require someone to make good on a threat or to call their bluff. It is widely and commonly used in the US.

it means either put up with whatever is happening/ being said or just shut up and stop talking. yes it sounds a bit odd
