A particle travels at 2ms-1 due to east for 1.5s and then travels at 4ms-1 due to north for 1s What isthe magnitude is of its average velocity for the whole journey？

Distance travelled toward east = 2 x 1.5 m = 3 m
Distance travelled towards north = 4 x 1 m = 4 m
Hence, displacement of the particle (i.e. distance between starting point and end point) = square-root(3^2 + 4^2) m = 5 m
Total time taken = (1.5 + 1) s = 2.5 s
Magnitude of average velocity = displacement/time taken = 5/2.5 m/s
= 2 m/s
Distance travelled towards north = 4 x 1 m = 4 m
