1) A splint has been soaked in an unknown. The tip of the splint is put into a flame. An orange colour appears. What is the interpretation for this result?
2) One ml of an unknown is placed in a test tube and a few drops of silver nitrate, AgNO3, are added. No change is observed. What is the interpretation for this result?

1) Supposing the splint is inert with respect to a flame test:
The most likely interpretation is that calcium was present, although strontium can also look orange under certain circumstances.
2. Such a result means that the only possible anions that could be present are nitrate or acetate. Any other anion would cause a precipitate with silver nitrate.
