Is it OK to eat food people leave behind in a restaurant/cafe/service station?

I saw someone leave behind an almost full plate of sausage and chips (3 whole sausages and almost all the chips) in a motorway services. I wanted to eat it but felt a bit weird so I went and bought my own food. It's haunted me ever since. The food would have been thrown away anyway and I could have prevented it being wasted and saved myself some money.

I'd PERSONALLY would never but many people don't have the luxury to chose like me. If you're just being cheap then I say only if they haven't touched or eaten it. I once paid at a dinner and never even touched my 70$ steak and only ate a couple of fries without ketchup. I came back in to grab my scarf and noticed a guy walking to his table chuckling at the guy he was eating with, he watched me, waited for me to pay and leave then took it. No shame in his game though, my loss, his win. I envied him that night when I was craving fries.

My friend did that in Las Vegas at the old Riviera casino in the food court. He was broke and hungry and was grazing off of leftovers on the tables. 2 minutes later securry escorted him out and banned him for life haha
But in general practice, it's not a good idea. You don't know if the person has a cold or virus and or how long the food has been out. It sucks but food is like toilet paper. Once it's been handled, it should be thrown away no matter if it still looks nice.

A restaurant in Michigan was caught taking what was on your abandoned plate when you left, and putting it on someone else's plate and serving it as newly cooked. They got a no-no fine. It was a popular restaurant, too.

Kinda gross but unlikely u will catch anything doing it other than maybe a cold especially if the food the kind generally not eaten with hands.

It's not very hygienic, but it probably won't kill you. Make sure you don't eat the bits where someone's bitten the food though

I think you need to be aware of the risks of picking up a serious infection like AIDS or hepatitis. I used to do it years ago though and I'm fine.
